Schubert String Quartet in D minor, D810 ‘Death and the Maiden’

Join us at the Opening Concert of our 2024 Festival. Haydn’s Op. 20 set of quartets were a landmark in the development of classical music, the first fully-formed string quartets in the mature Classical style that would give rise to the masterpieces of Mozart and Beethoven, as well as Haydn. By the 1820s, with Beethoven and Schubert, the string quartet had developed hugely from the refined musical conversations of the 1770s. Schubert’s Death and the Maiden is as highly-charged a Romantic utterance as the medium would perhaps ever witness.
